本文
There are a ton of smart trackers flooding the market right now, especially with Apple’s Find My network continuing to grow and the recent release of the Gen 2 Airtags. But those new AirTags still have the same issues that the first gen had, which is that their form factor makes it awkward to put in wallets, and they use disposable batteries. KeySmart’s new SmartCard aims to alleviate all of that. It is just 1.7mm thin compared to the 8mm thickness of the AirTag, and it recharges wirelessly! There is a lot to like about the new SmartCard, and I think anyone who uses a wallet should consider getting one. Here is what you should know.
KeySmart SmartCard Gen 3
There are a lot of useful and meaningful features packed in this little card-shaped tracker. The first thing that standsout is just how slim it is. It’s basically the thickness of a regular metal credit card. You can see it stacked against a regular credit card below. Their biggest improvement to this new Gen 3 model is their new chip. It provides faster processing, better connectivity to the Find My network, and has much better power efficiency as well. All those improvements mean we go from 8 months of battery life to 11 months on a single charge! Here is a spec breakdown:
1.8mm thin
Up to 11 months per charge of the battery
Charges via Qi wireless charging (works with MagSafe)
IPX8 waterproof (completely submersible underwater)
Status light and sound alerts
Works with Find My and Google Hub
The form factor and wireless charging alone make this tracker extremely convenient. Being able to just attach the card to one of my main MagSafe chargers for a bit and knowing I can basically use it for a year without recharging is amazing.
My experience
It really blows my mind that Apple has not made a form factor like this. I am amazed at how thin, yet sturdy, this KeySmart tracker is. It fits perfectly into my Puncube wallet alongside my other cards. It does not add any extra bulk and just disappears like any other card. In daily use, it just disappears like a normal card; there are no pressure points when you sit down, and you don’t have that awkward protruding bump you’d get from trying to carry an AirTag in a standard wallet.
Setting this card up in the Find My network was also very easy and feels nearly identical to when you connect your AirTag to Find My. Then, once you pair, you get all the tracker features you would want. The SmartCard gives you location updates, alerts you when you are separated from your wallet, and you have the ability to trigger a sound to help you locate it when you are close. The improved connection reliability from the new chipset seems to help with consistency indoors, which is often where trackers struggle the most. Then, of course, the Qi charging is a great quality of life feature. As I mentioned above, being able just wirelessly to charge the SmartCard is a game-changer for longevity. There is no proprietary magnetic charger or an obscure battery you need to replace. Just put it on your wireless phone charger, and you are good for another 11 months!
Pricing and availability
The KeySmart SmartCard (Gen 3) is available today on Amazon and on their website. It comes in two colors: Black and a new translucent color called ghost. They are sold as a single, 3-pack, or 5-pack. The single is $39, the 3-pack is $89, and the 5-pack is $139. I think these are a great gift for anyone in the family, and if you get the 5-pack, that comes to just $28 per card! As I mentioned, it feels premium, well-built, ultra-thin, and has all the features you expect from a tracker. And while it is in the shape of a card, you can put this in anything. A purse, bag, fanny pack, luggage, just pair it to Find My and watch yourself never lose anything again!
What do you think? Are card-style trackers worth it?
